Policy Advisor (m/f)

position for its Representation in Brussels, starting by June 1st, 2020.

About the GIZ Representation

The mission of the GIZ Representation in Brussels is to position the enterprise in the EU context and to ensure the coherence of its actions and visibility in Brussels. To fulfil this, our activities range from interest representation vis-à-vis the EU institutions and other partners, to radar function and observation of the EU policy framework; they also include advisory services to our Management Board and other GIZ organisational units.

Role purpose

The selected candidate will be part of a small and dynamic team of policy advisors, responsible for, among others, the monitoring and analysis of EU policies around international cooperation for sustainable development, as well as related advisory services. He/she will play an active role in enhancing the positioning of GIZ in the Brussels context, as well as in liaising with relevant departments within the company.

Main responsibilities

  • Policy analysis and advice: monitor EU International Cooperation and External Affairs policy developments and produce analyses relevant for the enterprise in the areas of interest for GIZ. This might include, but shall not be limited to, climate change, climate finance, employment and job creation.
  • Advisory services for GIZ’s management board and other units of the enterprise as well as external partners and/or institutions
  • Partnership building, network and contact management: maintain and further develop partnerships with EU institutions and other relevant stakeholders (including for example other EU Member States implementing organisations, think tanks, etc.) in the areas mentioned above. Focal point for GIZ relation with Friends of Europe.
  • Coordination of delegation visits: advising and coordinating GIZ high level delegations to Brussels.
  • Coordination of the drafting and editing of the Representation weekly Newsletter “EU Montagstelegramm”.
  • Other activities: Actively contribute to the core activities of the Representation, including conception and organisation of events / (technical) meetings, preparation of briefing material, and other tasks as needed.  
     

Person specification

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in political science, European studies, economics, law or related area;
  • Excellent levels of written and spoken German and English;
  • Ideally 5 years of relevant experience at the international level, including experience of working with / within the EU institutions in institutional / political affairs or development cooperation;
  • Good knowledge of the EU external action policies and related financing instruments;
  • Familiarity with the area of development cooperation;
  • Commitment to GIZ mission and values.
  • Valid work permit for Belgium

Additional qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience of the Brussels environment;
  • Experience in public affairs and contact management in the EU context;
  • Professional experience at field level with a bilateral or multilateral development organization;
  • Other EU languages are an asset.

What we offer

The position will be based in a dynamic and attractive office in Brussels’ European Quarter. We offer an indefinite contract under Belgian law (PC200) as a full-time position, with a competitive salary, defined on the basis of the level of experience of the selected candidate.

The package includes additional holidays, lunch vouchers, complementary health insurance in case of hospitalization and subsidy for from/to work transport (public transport or bike).
