APPLiA represents the common interests of home appliance manufacturers in Europe. The Association has 22 Direct Members and National Associations covering 25 countries. It promotes the industry's mission to increase appliance performance while reducing its impact on the environment. It plays an active role in the fields of sustainability, energy efficiency, ecodesign, energy labelling, e-waste, resource management, smart living, trade, safety and standardisation.
The successful candidate will work on environmental issues related to the home appliance sector, leading files in APPLiA’s environment policy team related to chemical legislation and materials used in home appliance products.
Profile - Environment Specialist – leading files on Materials & Chemicals
We are looking for an independent, motivated and well-organised person, with demonstrated experience in project management and EU advocacy. He/she is a good communicator with a positive attitude, a strong sense of teamwork and can adapt easily to changing circumstances.
Responsibilities:
- Manage APPLiA’s environmental files, leading on issues related to chemicals and materials used in the home appliance sector in the context of the EU Green Deal, the European Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU Plastics Strategy, REACH, RoHS, WEEE, Gases and Materials in contact with foodstuff;
- Within this policy scope, monitor and identify legislative proposals, relevant issues and decisions that affect APPLiA;
- Intelligence gathering and technical analysis of documentation and legislative proposals related to the current EU environment policy agenda;
- Develop and advocate legislative, regulatory and public policy positions at EU and national level, in close coordination with the APPLiA membership;
- Prepare briefing materials, position papers and presentations for stakeholders, regulators, member organisations and senior management;
- Drive consensus in the membership to develop positions on issues of common interest;
- Play a role in the development of APPLiA’s Circular Appliance strategy - www.circularappliances.eu ;
- Promote and represent the home appliance sector towards the European Institutions;
- Represent APPLiA at internal and external technical meetings;
- Engage with relevant stakeholders and expert industry organisations and research institutions;
- Maintain a stakeholder network across European and national institutions;
- Arrange outreach and organise policy events;
- Coordinate advocacy positions with national other Europeanindustry associations;
- Manage internal working groups - Preparation of meeting agendas, minutes, presentations, documents and logistics.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years professional experience in the area of EU affairs;
- Relevant Bachelor or Master’s Degree: political, environmental, chemical, engineering preferred;
- Knowledge of EU decision making processes and the workings of EU institutions;
- Demonstrated competence in EU environmental policy issues, particularly related to materials and chemical issues;
- Experience drafting high quality written documents for EU industry stakeholders, senior executives and politicians;
- Established network, or ability to develop and maintain network with policymakers and stakeholders at European and national level;
- Previous professional experience in a trade/industry association or within the home appliance sector will be considered a strong asset;
Technical skills:
- Good level of general computer literacy: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, slide presentations, spreadsheets, databases, web-meeting platforms;
- Project management and visual presentation skills;
- Good analytical skills and an ability to assimilate the various aspects of an issue rapidly.
Personal qualities:
- Independent, able to work autonomously as well as within a team;
- Excellent organisational skills, in particular to manage multiple parallel work streams, and to identify which need to be prioritised;
- Ability to work on a number or projects simultaneously and to manage competing demands and deadlines;
- Capacity to work effectively in cross-cultural and diverse stakeholder environment;
- Ability to manage relationships with colleagues and members constructively, diplomatically and with discretion;
- Comfortable speaking in public and to large groups.
Languages:
- Professional level spoken and written English, additional languages are beneficial.
