AAP Animal Advocacy and Protection (Stichting AAP in Dutch) is recruiting for a head of the Public Policy Department to join one of Europe’s most successful teams in the field of exotic animal welfare.

AAP is an international animal welfare organization working for a better future for exotic, non-domesticated animals. AAP operates two rescue and rehabilitation facilities, one in the Netherlands (Stichting AAP Almere) and one in Spain (AAP Primadomus), and is engaged in advocacy and campaigning for better legislation at regional, national and European level. AAP focuses on three main areas of work: private ownership of exotic animals as pets, use of wild animals in entertainment and illegal wildlife trade. In the last few years, AAP has made itself into an important player that is being recognized as such both by our partners and by the governments we need to achieve our goals.

The Public Policy Department leverages the knowledge and expertise acquired in over 45 years of animal rescue practice into long-term policy-based solutions to address the problems at their roots. We are the strategic antenna of the organization, translating analysis and projections into advocacy plans which we implement together with our international partner network.

AAP employs about 115 paid staff and more than 230 volunteers. AAP is situated in the middle of a green area near Almere, about a half hour away from Amsterdam. There are only few places where you can see the result of your efforts as directly as at AAP: both our offices are located next to our animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities. AAP distinguishes itself by having an enormous passion and a professional, open culture. Our core values are accessibility, dedication and inventiveness.

Public policy department

Within AAP, the Public Policy Department is responsible for influencing policy and (public) campaigning in Europe and is thus the strategic antenna of the organization. The department establishes the connection between sustainable solutions in our priority animal welfare programs and the practical rescue; the department dictates the guidelines for our rescue work. The Public Policy department’s strategic analyses are translated into policy and action plans. The execution of these plans is conducted by AAP itself and by co-operation with partner organizations.

You are responsible for the internationally-operating Public Policy Department. This department consists of a small team of professionals employed by AAP (Almere and Primadomus), working in close collaboration with a large number of organizations in our (European) network. In order to do so, you make long-term plans while at the same time you are able to make use of opportunities in the short term. The goal is to introduce or update legislation in the most effective way to serve our goals. To achieve this, you build up and maintain (international) networks and know to activate them for the benefit of the organization. Obviously, you and your team will travel regularly for your work. You are responsible for the drafting and execution of all policy plans of the organization, together with your team. In addition, you are a member of the Management Team and report to the Board. In short: a crucial position in an ambitious, increasingly influential organization working on some of the most pressing questions of our time.
