Things I liked most:

AmCham is a great place to start a career. They gave me exposure to senior stakeholders - both policymakers and in the membership - that I would not have dreamed of getting elsewhere, allowing me to build an excellent network. They also placed a huge amount of trust in me, giving me opportunities to lead and drive work independently.

Things could have been better:

AmCham will always struggle to retain people if it retains its current model. Its trust in young people, and the opportunities it gives them, allow them to grow swiftly, but its approach to development, pay, promotion and mentoring will always limit the "shelf life" of its employees. After 6 months or so at Policy Adviser level, I felt the rate of my development plateauing - and unfortunately saw no ways AmCham could support me taking additional steps to develop and progress. It seemed all they could offer was a vague promise of a "senior" title, after an arbitrary two years, rather than any significant change in responsibilities that would need you to step up. I also felt the pay and rewards policy to be demotivating, seeming as it did not to take into account performance. Finally, AmCham lacks a comprehensive approach to mentoring young talent, and offering advice and guidance to help them grow. All of this meant that I felt obliged to leave fairly swiftly after getting to grips with the Policy Adviser position.
